I have recently had the pleasure of working alongside Janina Carlstad with a group of students in the grade 5 and 6 fine arts classes.  In these classes, each of us constructed and decorated a Northern Spirit Native American flute.  The students were very enthused and excited about this project and just couldn’t wait to learn to play their flutes.  Over a period of time, Janina taught the students a number of songs.  Janina then registered the students in the spring Grande Prairie and Area Encana Music Festival to play a song of their choice, some of whom composed their own music.  This was the first time ever that the Native American flute was played in this particular music festival, and the adjudicator was fascinated in the music and each student’s beautifully decorated flute.  This entire journey was truly an amazing experience which Janina took us through.
